Halong Bay in Vietnam
One day a few years ago, I had a leak in my house. The plumber came to fix the leak and while he was writing out my bill, he asked me what I did for a living. I described my counselling practice as being an opportunity for clients to see their concerns, such as depression, anxiety and relationship angst, as being the symptoms of the underlying problem of negative core beliefs. The depression or relationship issues were not the actual problem. The way my clients looked at themselves was the issue.
He smiled and he said, "Hey, we do the same thing! The leak is never where the problem is! The leak may be around the sink and then the water runs to the lowest place and then drips down below. I have to find the original leak." I laughed and said, "Yes, I guess that makes me an emotional plumber!"
The message of this story is that whatever seems to be upsetting you is never the real issue. It is the symptom of the underlying issue which would be various beliefs and ideas that you may hold about yourself. Happily, once you know what these issues are, these beliefs can be changed. They are just beliefs after all!
We all deserve to live a happy life.
