In our lives we have found many ways of coping with pain. We deny it. We ignore it or we push it away. All these coping mechanisms serve only to keep what we are defending against. What started out as a way to handle our problems can, in fact, become the problem itself.

When we actually look at the pain and experience what it is and where it came from, it can feel rather uncomfortable for a short while and then the feelings and fear tends to dissipate.

 It is not unlike receiving a deep massage. A muscle hurts and the masseuse pushes hard on that tensed up muscle. I can barely breath. She suggests I breath and I struggle to catch a breath. Then there is a shift in the muscle, she releases her hold and like magic, the muscle is relaxed and I feel huge relief.

It is not dissimilar in therapy. As we look at the feelings, they get bigger and seem overwhelming. If a client stays with this process the feelings will shift and abate and then there is incredible relief. Almost a giddiness.
